What’s up hoopsters? Today you’ll be witnessing history, for this day, January 6th 2008 we will be holding the first ever annual hoops award!
I was supposed to choose my own set of winners but since I haven’t consulted any of the writers and the readers then I figured it should be called the Chrisangelo 2007 Hoops awards and that name would suck. So I decided to wait post an initial entry, wait for your response and create another blog post to determine the winner, cool huh?
Note: To gain more response and thus make this a more formal *pukes* thread, I’m going to post this everywhere, my blogger, my multiply and other forums… I suggest you post this to your blog too.. just don’t forget to put the original url.
Voting ends next Sunday, January 13 2008
So here we go!
Candidates for the International and the local baller of the year
International
LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers)
King James led his young team to the NBA finals last season before getting spanked in the behind by the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals. LeBron was a serious contender for the MVP plum last season, averaging 27 points 6 rebounds and 6 assists last year.
Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers)
One noticeable thing that Kobe did last year is his 4 straight 50+ scoring games, he had 10 50+ scoring games last year to become the only player not named Wilt Chamberlain to do that in a season.
Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs)
The Big Fundamental once again led the Spurs into another Championship appearance last season. Last season Timmy averaged 20 points 10 rebounds and 3 assists.
Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks)
Dirk won his first ever MVP award last year, thanks to his career averages. Dirk scored 24.6 points, 8 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game last season, thus leading the Mavs to a 67 win season before getting booted out by the Golden State Warriors in the first round.
Steve Nash (Phoenix Suns)
Steve Nash barely missed the MVP award last season. Steve averaged 18 Points and a career high 11 assists to lead the Suns into the second round of the playoffs before losing to the Spurs 4-2.
If I missed anyone, just post them in the comment box and we’ll put them in consideration.
Local
Willer Miller (Alaska Aces)
Willie Miller had his best season last year IMO. Being tagged as Alaska’s second import in the Fiesta Conference, Willie won his second season MVP award last year and led the Aces to the Fiesta Conference crown.
Mark Caguioa (Barangay Ginebra Kings)
Last year, Mark Caguioa proved that he is indeed the best scorer in the league. Mark won the best player of the conference award in the Philippine cup while leading the Barangay Ginebra Kings to the Philippine Cup Championship.
Jayjay Helterbrand (Barangay Ginebra Kings)
The other half of the Fast and the Furious tandem should make this list after being the pivotal player in their Championship run last year. Jayjay won the finals MVP award in last year’s Philippine Cup.
Mark Cardona (Talk and Text Phone Pals)
Playing in the shadows of the big three Asi, Jimmy and Renren.. Mark took the opportunity to prove himself as a legit superstar by leading the Talk and Text Phone Pals to the Championship before bowing down to the Aces. Mark Cardona also won the Fiesta Conference BPC Award last year.
Gary David (Air 21 Express)
Gary was a serious threat to Willie Miller’s MVP Award last year before getting injured. Mr.Pure Energy was definitely playing his career season, averaging atleast 20 points a game while hitting those oh so crucial jumpers whenever needed. He won the Most Improved Player award last year.
If I missed anyone, just post them in the comment box and we’ll put them in consideration.
Breakthrough Player of the Year
International
Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls)
The 6’8 forward made airwaves last year in the first round of the Playoffs against the Miami Heat. The former Duke standout averaged 18 points and 7 rebounds last year.
Kevin Martin (Sacramento Kings)
Kevin Martin had career highs in points, rebounds and assists last year. K-Mart v2 averaged 20 points 3 rebounds and 2 assists last season.
Monta Ellis (Golden State Warriors)
Monta had a big season last year, of course who would ever forget his highlight reel on Leandro Barbosa? But the biggest HL of his career last year was him winning the Most Improved Player award last season.
If I missed anyone, just post them in the comment box and we’ll put them in consideration.
