I just registered in the online fantasy league site called pbfantasy.com. Its kind of a big deal site since it gets exposure in the actual PBA coverage. It’s simple… could be boring… but it could morph to bigger things once you cash in on its dividends.
Hey, you know me… I love to research my stats so this is something that I like. If you want to see where I’m playing, search the Chicago Balls team in the cap’n kids’ league section. Damn right, I mocked the name of the best NBA team in the 90’s. The problem I find with the game though is that once you register, you can’t change leagues. However, for all you PBA addicts, this is the best way to become a PBA franchise owner.
Here’s the thing: I am going to mimic Rick Kamla and try to lure you in making the right choices for your fantasy team. You have 1,000,000 pesos and you have to get a starting five worthy for your budget. You can’t have an all-superstar lineup since one superstar would probably get 300,000. Judging from their current stats and their price list, here are the best deals you can get.
CENTER:
THE BEST PICK: Asi Taulava is the best center in the PBA today. With him on your lineup, you’ll definitely get at least an easy 30FPPG (fantasy points per game). The problem is, he is too darn expensive. While you can try on lesser stars like Mark Telan, Enrico Villanueva, Jay-R Reyes, Dennis Espino, and Jay-R Reyes, The Rock is the best pick at the C spot.
OVERPRICED: Eric Menk is injury prone. If you insert him to your lineup, you’ll probably get a shady game or a DNP. That will definitely suck.
BUDGET DEAL: The league has a thin lease for quality big men. Carlo Sharma is a possibility but he plays for Red Bull. Homer Se could be another guy that could give you a credit player to suit your cap space. But the best deal here is Don Allado. The former DLSU player is a sure guy to crack at least 15FFPG a night. Like Sharma though, Allado’s problem is definitely playing time.
FORWARDS:
THE BEST PICK: This is anyone’s pick. Kelly Williams is blazing although guys like Arwind Santos, Nic Belasco, Jay Washington, and Kerby Raymundo could provide the same game the Machine Gun could provide. However, my money is sold to Ranidel de Ocampo. First he is consistently getting double-double nights… then add the fact that he is less expensive than the others mentioned. If he continues to give those freakishly outstanding stats, expect your team to pile up points!
OVERPRICED: Joe Devance is getting jobber points than what he had in his rookie season, Danny Seigle is another player that has yet to blossom, and whoever picked up Ali Peek must be stupid.
BUDGET DEAL: While there are a lot of good forwards in the lineup like John Ferriols, Gabe Norwood, Larry Rodriguez and even Rob Wainwright, factor the fact that Harvey Carey is seriously cheap. He has rebounds, points, and blocks that could rival Washington, Belasco, and even Raymundo on a bad night. However, you also have to consider Red Bull’s Gabby Espinas. Espinas is claiming MVP numbers and he is severely economical. Actually, I’ll pick Espinas over Carey. Eddie Laure is another player that’s budget friendly but you have to wonder if his sudden outburst could dominate the league.
GUARDS:
THE BEST PICK: Jayjay Helterbrand is so consistent that no one else could come close to his stats. He just needs to up his assist game to max out his abilities. Ryan Reyes is another stat grabber. Willie Miller? With Alaska trying hard to limit their opponents’ scores, they also suffer stat loss. Miller is their top scorer but he is mere scoring 13.5ppg. His rebounds and assists are up though. You could take Miller, but you have to brace yourselves that he may not pile the FFPG that you crave.
OVERPRICED: Mike Cortez has been nonexistent this season. His spot has been taken by Bonbon Custodio… and Jonas Villanueva gets more minutes than him! Denok Miranda is also expensive because his defensive prowess is undetectable in the stat column. Lordy Tugade needs to get stats other than points… while Mark Caguioa has yet to play this season. Topex Robinson, while less expensive than the other players mentioned, is a weak choice to pick at the PG spot.
BUDGET DEAL: Mark Cardona is pricey but understandable. PJ Simon and Gary David are cheap finds… although you have to expect that the only stats you can get from them are points. Solomon Mercado, Norwood, and Jared Dillinger are also low-budget performers. Bonbon Custodio, Paolo Hubalde, TY Tang and Chris Pacana are less than 100k possibilities that could work on your favor… but these guys are mostly relievers.
Try visiting the site and play your best 5.
