What will happen when two schools of thought combine? One is said to be SYDMAN (aka Drixlazar), The Idea Diarrhea because of his reeking, continuous, overflowing, brownish basketball ideas while the other is the Chrisangelo, the Walking Pornographic Bastard who like many of you, browses the net for everyday girl-on-doberman porn action!
From the depths of society, two bitchin’ talents merging with a promise to promote the truth to the wide scale audience! Forming the biggest idea that will forever shape the stellar internet-basketball-blog-writing-world into another orbit?
We don’t really hope to achieve anything… but educate you about the basketball world! And we’re going to do that by giving you guys an un-expert-like opinion to frequently asked questions by basketball fans.
Believe us. We’re serious.
(GOD I HATE USING THIS OPENING PARAGRAPH, FOR ALL OF YOU WHO MAY ASK, SYDMAN DID THAT OPENING STATEMENT YEARS AGO)
So we haven’t been doing breakdowns lately mainly because Sydman is soul searching in Zimbabwe while I have been busy in the past week moving from one graveyard to another, one reason why there have been no Astig Rankings for two straight weeks now. But thank God for idle time because if it wasn’t for it, we wouldn’t have made another breakdown.
Now, the questions..
Question 1: IVERSON vs BILLUPS? Denver or Detroit? Who won the trade?
Me: I think it would benefit both teams in some ways but I think the negative stuff overcomes the positives in this one. Iverson, for all we know is a great scorer, who can pass if he wants to and dominate a game any minute but can he really blend well with sheed, tayshaun and rip?
For Denver, they got Billups. A team leader who occassionaly hits big shots when needed. Right now, Melo must prove that he can carry an offensive load alone with AI gone. If Melo sucks this year, Denver is toast (But they’re toast anyway).
Syd: Can’t pinpoint who’ll win but if Billups could get Carmelo Anthony to raise his game, then I’ll still go for DET-RIOT. Denver lost Camby via stupidity and they are an SG away from being good. The Pistons on the other hand, has an established core that could win the championship. The only thing that bugged them then was the lack of a superstar player. Surely Iverson can deliver the goods. He is not like the Dumars/Johnson built of Billups (cause he’s more of an Isiah type) and he gets all the bumps but less the DNP’s. The only thing that could make his entry sour is his ability to coexist with the other players.
Question 2: PBA related question. San Miguel, will they go all the way? And if not, who do you think will stop them?
Syd: Hmmm… pretty easy question: No. Why? They are a great team but they have to lessen their turnovers. And I guess at this stage it is too early to tell the big guns from the wannabes. SMB is certainly a big gun but we never expected Rain or Shine to dominate. Big money could be on SMB, but I have to still say that SLR will return and win the big dance. Sure, they are playing sluggishly, but this was the same team that had the same record at this stage of the tourney.
Plus we saw all the mediocre games of williams, reyes, and omolon. believe me, that will never happen until the end of the tourney.
for SMB, the risk they’ll have losing the tourney is if they can’t deal with their turnover problem.
Me: Hmm, I think this is their year. But if I’m to pick a team that would give them troubles.. Alaska will be the next logical choice. Alaska has a line up that can match up with SMB’s roster. Alaska’s conservative system is the system that can and would beat SMB if they meet in a seven game series. They have Miller who can deliver anytime and an ample set of bigmen that can be a strong backbone for their defense
Question 3: Gabe Norwood reports… does he really play soft?
Me: No. He’s not really the Wynne ARboleda type of point guard but he’s not that soft. He looks soft but that’s it, his athleticism makes up for his lack of muscle anyway. Check out his stats, look at the rebound line and you’ll see what I mean.
Syd: I like Norwood but he pretty much plays like LeBron James in his first season. He likes to involve everyone but he needs to really assert himself. This was the same case when he played for the Hapee team in the PBL. the time he scored 23 points really kicked Ginebra to the curve anew. More of those with an added other stats and he’ll blossom big time.
Plus he looks like Barack obama as Benhur pinpointed, do you smell what Barrack is cooking?
Question 4: Alright, the ultimate NBA question. Your bet sa East and sa West this year?
Syd: East? Easy. Still Boston because I’m hoping they’ll have a Boston-LA Deux. This means my vote is for LA too. Yeah, both teams lost to less than stellar squads early, but LA is a point guard away from having a big season. Boston’s bench has evolve and I’m thinking that the Big Three will do whatever they need to dominate. Sure James Posey, the lucky bastard, won’t be around for the Celts. But the East, with the exception of Detroit has nothing to be afraid of… if they don’t act like jerks and become arrogant shitheads. for the West San Antonio has been struggling and the only teams i can see moving to face the lakers are the hornets and the suns.
Me: For the west, easy, Lakers will take it. Have you seen their first four games? They’ve been whooping ass since day 1. Ariza, Douche-acic and Farmar has been fantastic and the return of Bynum would help their cause to stop big guys like Amare, TD, C-Booz and David West.
In the East, Cleveland man. This is LBJ’s year. While it’s hard to discount the Celtics this year, I have this feeling that LeBron and his peeps would finally break out and have the beginning of the Kobe vs LeBron finals series
Question 5: PBFantasy, your thoughts?
Me: It’s cool to finally have a Philippine Basketball Fantasy Game, altho I wished it would’ve been like the NBA where in you get to choose a whole team.
My analysis so far, Asi’s the player to get. Norwood, Gabby and Larry R are quality picks and Jayjay’s a bit overpriced. Eric Menk too.
Syd: I hate the fact ranidel sucks like hell these days but i like the fact that villanueva, norwood, cardona, and espinas is doing good. i like the fantasy league. but like you said, i hope we could at least get 10-12 players. i mean that would really break the whole system. I could see myself getting hubalde, gonzales, and even tang but we know they’ll be limited to benchies in fantasy league world.
Question 6: Foreign coach for out national team.. yes or no?
Syd: yeah. these coaches seem to miss the point that in international competition, or local coaches suck. they need mentors that knows the fiba game. problem is, chito narvasa and the rest of BCAP will hurl his ass out without getting any glory. fact is, while they bicker, other countries are evolving. i cannot believe iran became asia’s crowning glory! the team doesn’t even have 1000 fans in their country! yeah i might be mean but that is not football so expect other countries to sigh at it. coaches need to know that if this guy could fuel a basketball-erring team like iran to victory, surely he’ll gain dividends in a basketball-loving country like ours!
Me: YES. People needs to eat their pride for once. While I love Coach Yeng’s coaching I think I’ve had enough watching local coaches take over our National Team. Like what you’ve said, we need Coaches who’s familiar to the rules, the style of play and players from all over the world. I doubt it will happen though because masyado tayong ma-pride but we really need to get those foreign coaches. badly.
Question 7: Your PBA Player of the Conference so far?
Syd: hmmm… for a guy that makes stats…big money is really think is on Willie Miller. Given, Asi, Kerby, and Arwind are far greater players that made an impact this conference, they are all .500 teams.
Alaska needs Miller because without him, they’ll drop and Miller led the team to a 5-2 grade now.
Me: Hmmm three words pare. Paul Asi Taulava
If I’m the manager of Coca Cola, I’ll change my monicker to Taulavers. He’s a monster, 20 points and 12 rebounds a game baby. The heart and soul of the Coca Cola franchise and if he could get Coca Cola in the Quarters, I expect him to take that award.
Question 7: PBL’s adopt-a-school system? a hit or a miss?
Me: Hit. Pero what’s the point if your star player is already committed to another team? Jervy’s playing for Hapee despite Magnolia’s decision to adopt the tigers
Syd: while i love those ictsi-la salle and ateneo-pioneer teams back in the old, not-so-long days, it seems like the pbl serves as growth balls for collgiate players in their training to move up in the pba. now, with this adopt a school, they are basically adding the missing pieces of their roster in college to make their team fordibale (and vice versa if you look at the pbl team’s perspective.)
You see STAG with marlou, webb, reuben dela rosa, david, and paul du. that was a rocking roster.
If you see escobal, you think this guy was pba ready? NO! because he just hugged every opportunity handed to him by beda. Magnolia was then san beda-magnolia while tnt has frnakie lim on the spot.
If he had a vast pbl experience then he’ll not look like a crappy, overly raw player he is like today.
And the big question for this breakdown is…
Pacman or Dela Hoya?
Syd: I just made a print ad for this fight. I’m a patriot. and even if i’m biased i’ll still go for pacquiao. dela hoya hasn’t won for a long time and i hope his streak continues.
Me: Dude, Dela Hoya won his last fight lol
Syd: i don’t care… what did he beat… some non-main eventer?
Me: Steve Forbes
Syd: I don’t care pacman would mess-up his chances.
Me: Anyway, if you watched the Pavlik – Hopkins fight, You’d see that size really is a huge difference in a fight.
Syd: No, you are not a filipino!
Me: Shudup. That being said, I’m hoping for a Pacquiao win, don’t get me wrong. But if Pacquiao fails to get inside and throw punches, De La Hoya would just jab away a boring 12 round victory.
Syd: Yeah, that’s another thing. dela hoya will probably ask for a part two whatever happens because i don’t think anyone would agree that he’ll have his way against Pacman.
Anyway, that would be our breakdown. Hey Ben, maybe you can be the third guy in our breakdown. We can be like Kenny, EJ and Charles! lol
Last thing, if you guys have some questions, HOOPS related or not post it over here or you can send it over at my email. hellboyhansen (At) rocketmail (dot) com
Til then. Cheers!
