So its official – Javale McGee will be a Filipino.

This should bother no one because the fact of the matter is that he’s clearly a saving grace to Philippine basketball. The documents are in and once the government agrees to the bill, the guy that wowed us when he visited the country last August will soon don the Philippine colors.

Although, you have to feel bad for Marcus Douthit.

The Doutmeister has been that dominating presence in the middle that we have long for. The nation is a sanctuary for off guards and small forwards but an inside force we are not. At best McGee should be a refined version of Japeth Aguilar but hopefully he’ll do more.

At least in Asia, we can safely say that we have the best center in McGee.

The entry of McGee should limit the capabilities of current Dallas Mavericks forward Yi Jianlian of China, current Memphis Grizzlies’ center Hamed Haddadi of Iran, former Portland Trail Blazers center Ha Seung-Jin of Korea, and others.

The entry of the Talk N Text Tropang Texters core as well as the other stars from the other PBA teams should make the team even more powerful. This is not like a makeshift team of the yesteryears because former mentor Rajko Toroman provided a system for new coach Chot Reyes to trace and a patriotic ideology for the players to motivate them. McGee joining Smart-Gilas alongside the country’s best is a good sign that even if they play in different PBA teams, they are united in completing that elusive goal.

Team Philippines flirted with success and were inches away for fulfilling their past glory. Whether its Douthit or McGee, hopefully they can help the Philippines to gain another crack to the top of Asia’s finest.

Game… wait.

Before I use the call sign I’m hoping to change in the near future, here’s an idea for Manny Pangilinan and company. Maybe MVP can acquire McGee from the Denver Nuggets once he successfully acquires the Sacramento Kings. I know the team currently has DeMarcus Cousins but we all know that Cousins need a PF or C to help him inside the shaded area.

Game over.
